Summary:
Two intensive sampling campaigns of nitrate in groundwater were carried out during December-2017 and January-2018 and during August-2018. All samples were analyzed for nitrate at the labs of the Water and Environmental Studies Institute. Now we have a very good data that will help in model development for nitrate fate and transport. Additional sampling campaigns for nitrate are planned next spring and summer. The conceptual model for the fate and transport of nitrate in the groundwater of the study area is being developed. In this regard the on-ground sources of nitrogen in the study area were identified and quantified. The PPU Team surveyed more than 312 wells in the study area. The data collected included the daily water discharge from each well, depth of wells, coordinates the wells, owners, current status of the well if it’s closed or in operation, any sources of on-pollution in the vicinity of each well. The PPU team completed land use study and developed spatial maps for different land use classes for the whole study area. The PPU team developed a potential on ground source of pollution spatial map for the study area, and developed several spatial maps for different pollutants for groundwater. The HEC developed the conceptual model of the groundwater flow for the study area. The numerical model of the steady state of groundwater was developed as well. In addition, the development of te unsteady state model is on-going and at its final stage.
