Project Summary


Palestine is running out of freshwater resources. The groundwater in Gaza Strip is heavily deteriorated and has high salt content due to seawater intrusion from the Mediterranean Sea. Therefore, an essential need has risen to adopt innovative advanced technologies, such as desalination with reverse osmosis membranes, which are capable of treating high salinity water and provide highly pure drinking water. In this research, the One-Step Reverse Osmosis (OSRO) concept has been introduced to treat brackish groundwater solely with RO membranes under anaerobic conditions without pretreatment. Moreover, the hydraulic optimized pressure vessel (Optiflux) concept was applied to increase the productivity of the membranes and lower energy consumption.

Research Objectives


The main objective of this research was to enhance the brackish water desalination plants of freshwater production in Gaza and lower the operating cost/energy by optimizing the whole process scheme, hydraulic conditions, and required equipment.
